Another trip to Lipe… same same but always a little different. 🤷 We did the usual flight to Hat Yai, taxi to Pak Bara combination with no issues. We were able to store the duffle (had to bring it for what’s next) at Tik’s place on the mainland again which was really nice. After a quiet night in Pak Bara we got the early ferry to Lipe. The speed boat was fine, not too wavy and we didn’t even have the extra stop along the way. We arrived with no issues, hopped a quick taxi to The Reef and we were back.
Our first night wasn’t the usual “hardcore” entry to Lipe, we eased into it a little. We’ll, we may have gone for sunset happy hour and ended up at Passion Bar after dinner but it was fun. All the usual crew were there Laura & Rob, Odne, Nunzia, Tik & Jesse, Kevin, Robin, Kristopher showing up later and of course, SomChai. We commenced a month of fun and frivolities. We kicked it off with a snorkel trip and BBQ at Bingo’s house. Tikky did the BBQ’ing and we had a great day. There were two boats, one full of Swedes and our boat that was the usual suspects. Beersbie was played, only minor injuries occurred, and it was a lovely sunset on the way back. It triggered Paul to start thinking that maybe our bodies needed a rest between Lipe and our upcoming Australian odyssey, so we arranged to leave a week early.
We had numerous meals as a large group, broke off into smaller ones, had nights of doing our own thing and meeting up afterwards… we all got to spend a lot of time together which was great. We frequented Tik and Jesse’s new Come Escape location for card nights and delicious food, including what I’d say are the best fries on the island. I tried an Aperol Spritz but it didn’t take for me so I switched back to wine. Paul got into Passion Fruit Mojito’s for Passion’s happy hour with the occasional glass of wine tossed in. The fellas (Paul, Rob, Jesse, Kevin and Robin) had their annual “boys night”. Technically, it’s a whole day but we’ll let them call it what they want. Passion did a drag show with Tiffany, a professional drag queen from Italy. It was a great show and coincided with Robin’s birthday and Valentine’s day. Ended up being a big night and we were at Maya Bar till the wee hours. We had lots of nights at Corner Bar. Song was playing a couple of nights a week, which was always a good time. Several nights at OMG had us meeting Robert from Malta who we hadn’t seen in a few years. Paul had a night out with Mikkel, Simon and Niels… as they called it nerding out. We managed to get two dinners with Nok, Mikkel and Darvin which was nice. In between the dinners and nights out, we spent days at Wapi or walking Sunrise beach.
I ended up getting sick this year instead of Paul so didn’t get to go on the last boat trip. Paul went and had a blast for both of us. Getting a rotten cold isn’t fun but Lipe is a petri dish so not a surprise. Anyway, we wrapped up our time with friends and headed off for a night in Hat Yai. We stayed more downtown and you can still see a lot of buildings and areas recovering from the flooding. We challenged ourselves by going to a very local Thai dimsum for breakfast, luckily the staff were friendly and helped us figure it out.
When we shortened Lipe, we decided to head to Kuala Lumpur. We are used to it and it’s easy for us to get to, plus that’s where our flight to Australia left from, so it made sense. We booked in at Leo’s and gave ourselves time to do laundry, catch up on sleep and eat some My Byiriani House. It was a nice break and we got ready to head off to Australia.
